Describe your project or internship. Attach your project plan.
During Externship, I will be interning with a freelance American Sign Language Interpreter. During the time, I will be shadowing his interpreting sessions, learning the ethics of interpreting, and picking up more sign language as time goes on. By the end of the internship, I want to be able to interpret a video, chosen by either me or my mentor, for my class. That way I can test my ASL skills and additionally put the learning I did to work. Click here to see my project plan. What are you excited about? Nervous about? I am really excited that for the first time, I'll have an internship where I won't be sitting in the same place for 8 hours. I really like change in work environment, working different hours, going with the flow. I'll also have an excuse to sleep in some days if I'm not needed in the morning which is always nice. Although all of the freelance benefits are great, I am nervous about actually signing. Obviously, I know some sign language but I'm definitely nowhere near fluent. It's going to be a little bit embarrassing since I know I'm going to mess up a ton; however, this is going to be quite the learning experience. Everyday I'll be surrounded by FLUENT signers! I'm both excited and nervous for that. Who is your internship/project mentor? What advice or feedback have you received from your mentor on your project plan? My mentor is an accredited sign language interpreter who graduated from Gallaudet. His name is Dan Fisher and I had met him in the past during an old internship. He has been pretty supportive with all my ideas so far. His advice was to just practice a little bit of my sign, giving me websites and books to really help out. Otherwise, he really likes my project idea and has no problem letting me intern with him.
