International Economic Summit
Summary
The International Economic Summit, IES for short, was a project in which students learned about various economic topics and participated in an activity. Students were assigned countries in which they had to study its economics and try and incorporate their new knowledge about economics to try and meet economic goals at the summit. At the summit students worked in their country groups to trade import and exports with other countries to try and meet their economic goals. As Argentina we put down many goals including financial services, business services, and we planned to buy long term investments to help benefit our country. While we didn't meet most of our big goals, we met the many little ones that benefited us and our final score.

What I Learned About My Country
Before studying about Argentina I had very little knowledge about it. The few knowledge I did have was that it was not a third world country and that Che Guevara was born there. However I learned a lot of things after researching about it. It took three "findings" for Europeans to finally settle there even though it was already inhabited by natives (just like America). I also learned about Juan Peron who changed the nation with his decisions. He allowed Nazis to flee to his country after World War II ended because he had sympathy for them. After he died military leaders took control. Because of this, the country became chaotic, people were "disappearing" and babies were getting kidnapped. Meanwhile, the country's economy was slowly going into a downward spiral. And even in present times, Argentina is still trying to cope with the economy crashing from those times.

Reflection
What is the most interesting and/or surprising thing you learned about economics and standard of living? The most interesting thing I learned about economics is how inaccurate numbers can be. For example GDP per capita can be off because one person can make $1 billion dollars while one person can make $1.50 and they will average out to be $500 million dollars which is inaccurate for both people. In addition the black market is not accounted for, so there could be more money circulating inside of a country than it is shown to be. What did you learn that helps you make more sense of the world around you (for example, the news)? I realize that there are a lot of factors of the economy that affects countries all around the world. For example, the inflation of Argentina causes the money to be less valuable, which leads into other investors not wanting to invest in the country. This also leads to angry citizens because of the bad economy, and so on. If a country is on an economic downfall, it can lead to violence and corruption like Syria or other countries involved in Arab Spring. Is there anything significant you learned about yourself? About how you work best under pressure? About how to create your best work? About how to effectively work in groups? I learned a lot about how I can work in groups during this project. For once I felt like I didn't initially take the spot as leader since team leaders were assigned. However in my group, I did feel like I did get the larger amount of work assigned. I am thankful for team leaders because it took a lot of pressure off of me. I learned to rely more on my group because I could count on them to finish the work they had to do. Once we got all the work done we would meet together as a group and critique it. After critiquing, our work would be better than how it would've been if I had worked by myself. |
